Cracks are inevitable in virtually all types of structures, given the types of materials, the ways we use or misuse them, and the operating conditions our buildings are exposed to. However, cracks are often unsightly and, to the uninitiated, can indicate serious problems. Whether a crack is a cause for concern depends, of course, on the circumstances, and whether further action is necessary depends on a proper diagnosis of the underlying problem.

This book, first published in 1996, provides a basic understanding of the science of materials behavior that is essential to understanding how and why cracks form. With this understanding, much can be done to prevent them from occurring, diagnose their cause, and prevent their recurrence.
